Kobalt 3-Drawer Toolbox: a Decent Box for a Decent Price

I don’t want to get too sappy sounding with my product reviews coming up to father’s day, but it’s tough not to. We all know that we care about our parents and we want to show them that a few times every year. Kobalt’s newest 3 Drawer Toolbox is probably just what dad wants for his garage or toolshed to help him with his projects. While we weren’t blown away here at Everyday Guide by this toolbox, we figured that some people may be interested in hearing what it’s got going for it. For the price, it’s a very solid buy and would probably make dad very happy…until next year.

Kobalt 3-Drawer Toolbox

EverydayGuide Rundown

Good

  • 50 pound capacity per drawer
  • Drawer liners with every toolbox
  • Great depth

Bad

  • Locking mechanism doesn’t work

The Good Side

Your dad will probably be very happy with his newest toolbox when you purchase it for him. Each of the three doors on the Kobalt toolbox can support up to 50 pounds of weight, which is very sturdy considering the options that the competition has. Plus, the depth to the drawers is also much deeper than most other toolboxes on the market. This means that whoever you buy this for can manage to put their heaviest and largest tools into the chest without having to worry about them taking up shelf space anymore. You obviously won’t be able to get huge saws and drill presses into the toolbox, but it should have no problem storing all of the screwdrivers and hammers your dad has laying around the garage floor.

Also nice about the box are the drawer liners. Toolbox companies stopped putting drawer liners in their toolboxes to help save themselves money, but customer’s tools always paid the price. It’s nice to see that Kobalt was kind enough to put drawer liners on the bottom of the drawers to prevent tools and equipment from getting scratched.

The Bad Things

We only have one complaint about the entire box and it may be the most detrimental part of the whole purchase. The locking mechanism on all of the drawers has a tendency to fail after a few months. This means that if you ever have to move the chest around at all, your drawers will fall out. Tthis has been customers’ number one complaint about this product and it doesn’t look like any of the updated models have a fix for this problem. At most, we expect this set of drawers to last about 6 months with casual wear and tear before the locking mechanism fails and your drawers don’t shut properly. This chest is still fine for anyone that just needs a storage unit, but someone that needs to lock their tools away should look elsewhere.
