In Review: Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells

Face it, we’d all like to be in better shape than we already are. Whether you’re thinking of buying these for your dear old dad or a friend that is trying to get into a fitness mindset, Bowflex has always been a strong brand of workout equipment and their SelectTech 552 dumbbells live up to the name as well. The dumbbell set is different than others in that instead of having many different dumbbells all in one case, Bowflex opted for an all in one approach by making all of their dumbbells interchangeable. By flicking a switch you are able to change the weight of the dumbbell with ease and not have to worry about owning a rack for all of your weights either. The price may be high for some casual users, but for people serious about their health and fitness, the cost is a rather small investment.

Bad

Give Me 10!

Most people avoid buying workout equipment to put in their home because of the amount of space that most of it takes up. The average middle class person simply doesn’t have an extra room in their house that they can dedicated to working out. The Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells are very easily stored, meaning that you don’t need a weight rack to store all of your weight equipment. This is nice if you just want to tuck the weights away in the closet or the corner of the living room so they’re not an eye sore. Also, because the Bowflex system is a compact, all in one system, weight changing is easy with them. With the simple spin of a dial you can go from an easy 5 pounds per dumbbell all the way up to 52.5 pounds in just seconds.

Because of some issues raised by the product, Bowflex offers a 2 year warranty on their weight products. The 2 year warranty will replace any damaged or broken parts for free within about a week. The product obviously shouldn’t break in the first place, but if it ever does, Bowflex has your back.

Look Out!

The first issue we’d like to address about the Bowflex’s problems is that the weights sometimes stick. If you don’t get the dial just right the weights won’t come out. It’s kind of a pain when you’re hot and sweaty during a workout to try and navigate a dial and get it perfectly aligned, but it’s not a huge issue. On the rare occasion the weights just won’t come out and you’ll have to give them a wiggle to get them unstuck, but this is of course a rare occurrence and shouldn’t happen often.

The main point of concern with the SelectTech dumbbells is their build quality. Bowflex didn’t opt for rugged materials on their weights, like metals or alloys. All of the weights and handles are made out of plastic. This means that if you should ever drop your 50 or so pound weight onto the ground it’s sure to break. The weights won’t just crumble in your hand of course, but if you like to play rough with your workout equipment, the SelectTech isn’t the best option for horseplay. Overall we were very pleased with the weight set and if you’re as interested in working out and staying fit as us, we’d give the thumbs up to go ahead and buy this set as long as you’re careful with it.
