Who knows, if you’re very careful, you might actually perfect this craft the first try. Let’s get started and learn how to spray car with spray paint.

  1. The first step in painting a car is to always prepare the area that you’ll spray paint. Some people spray paint just the doors or the hood. So if you are just spray-painting a certain part, it would be easier to remove that part for easy painting. Another way to do it is to tape around it so you won’t be spraying on to the rest of the parts of your car. However, you might overspray or get into a little accident ending up in a messy spray paint. So the best and recommended way is to just remove that part that needs spray painting. If it’s a hood your painting, remove the hood and bring it to a clean working area.
  2. Now it’s time to sand the area that will be painted. Use a 300 grit sand paper and sand it until you feel the surface is a little rough. This step is important if you are repairing the paint. Perhaps you bumped into a cone and it has scratched your paint a bit, then you’ll need to sand that area before spraying paint. Sanding it will allow the surface and the primer to bond. After you sand the area, just wipe it down with a micro fiber cloth.
  3. Next is to spray the area with a primer. It’s better to do a few light sprays or coats rather than making one heavy coat. Also remember to allow proper drying time in between sprays. It will also allow you to check on the paint and see if it still needs another spray or not.
  4. After a number of light coats of primer, get an 800 grit sandpaper and wet-sand the area. After sanding, clean it up by wiping with a micro fiber cloth.
  5. After priming up the surface, it’s time to spray paint with the color. As you spray paint your car, make sure that you use smooth even passes throughout the surface. Like in spraying primer to your car, make use of a few light coats. You also need proper drying time in between those sprays.
  6. Once you get the right color, wet-sand the area again with an 800-grit sandpaper. Again, after sanding, wipe it up with a micro fiber cloth.
  7. After that, it’s time to use the final coat which is the clear coat. Spray the clear coat the same way you did with the spray paint color of your choice. You’ll only need about one or two light coats for the clear coat. Allow it to dry as long as possible because it is the last layer or coat in your car.
  8. After drying the clear coat, wet-sand the area again with an 800 grit. Next, use a 1000 grit, then a 1200 grit, 1500 grit, and finally a 2000 grit sand paper. This will remove any heavy spots and will polish your car perfectly.
  9. Lastly, use a rubbing compound and buff the surface. After the rubbing compound, use a medium cut polish and buff the surface again. Lastly, it’s good to wax your car after a paint job so you can protect your paint.
