What Are the Symptoms of Alcoholism?

Alcoholism, which is also known as alcohol dependence is described as a chronic disease. Individuals suffering from alcoholism are unable to control the amount of alcohol that they drink. While alcoholism has numerous symptoms, the following are the most common.

Excessive alcohol intake

When alcoholics start drinking alcohol, they have a hard time stopping. The reason behind the excessive intake of alcohol could be tolerance. When individuals drink alcohol for long periods of time their bodies become tolerant.

Alcoholics are also likely to get annoyed especially when family members and other people close to them criticize them about their drinking. In most instances, alcoholism is a touchy subject especially where alcoholics are present. When confronted, they deny having a drinking problem.

Persistent use of alcohol

Alcoholics consume alcohol frequently. They do this even when they are aware that they have a recurrent or persistent psychological and/or physical problem that is probably caused or made considerably worse by alcohol.

Impaired memory

Alcoholics experience what are referred to as blackouts. They often forget where they went or what they did the morning after they have been drinking.

  • As an individual slips deeper and deeper into alcohol, they no longer care about their physical experience. It is not uncommon to find alcoholic wearing to work the same clothes they had on the previous day.
  • Individuals who are dependent on alcohol also miss work frequently.
  • Another symptom of alcoholism is drinking alcohol immediately one wakes up. Alcoholics do this because they believe it helps prevent hangover without knowing they are only making their bodies alcohol-tolerant.
  • Individuals suffering from alcoholism also hide and keep alcohol in the most unlikely places. You are likely to find bottles of alcohol under an alcoholic’s bed or even in the closet.
