Start Protecting Your Furniture
Over the course of about three or four days we noticed a drastic reduction of humidity in the air. Not only could you feel the difference between the air that had been dehumidified and the old air, but it was apparent in the furniture as well. Our wooden furniture actually shrunk in size after using this GE dehumidifier. How is that possible? When water is in the air, anything you own that’s made of wood will absorb the water from the air. By pulling all of the water from the room, the wood will release its water back into the air to be sucked up resulting in smaller furniture. The difference in size wasn’t huge, but you could notice it in the grooves that joined the wood together.
Best of all, the GE dehumidifier is very quiet. If you have a serious humidity problem you can turn the fan onto a high setting and pull a lot of water very quickly, but if you’re using this device in a living space, that’s not optimal. The low fan speed settings on the device let out a gentle hum that can barely be heard in a silent room. This is the best setting to leave the device on as it won’t disrupt everyday life.
Also good to note is that this dehumidifier has an automatic shutoff gauge. When the water bucket beneath the device is full of water, the device shuts off and won’t let any more water in. There is a digital gauge on the front of the unit to tell you how full the bucket is, but it’s nice to know that if you forget to empty the bucket every so often that it won’t overflow onto your carpet.
Consider Something Else?
The only reason you may want to consider another dehumidifier for your home use is because this one is very cumbersome. Although it only weighs about forty pounds, it’s definitely noticeable. It’s not so much the weight of the unit that’s the problem as is its awkward shape. We found it easiest to move with two people, but it may be a one man job if you can get your arms around it the right way.
Other units on the market are lighter and easier to carry. So if you’re an elderly person and don’t think you’d be able to move this from room to room, consider another unit from a different company. The weight doesn’t affect performance, in fact this is one of the best performing units we’ve seen, but the weight issue would definitely be a concern for many customers.
