How to Repair a Fishing Reel

A fishing reel is like a small pulley that is attached to the rod in order to retract the fishing line. Like any other things, the fishing reel of a fishing rod wears out in time. You have to maintain it to last long. You always have to check the reel before fishing because you do not want to be in a situation where you are already fishing then suddenly your rod does not work. You cannot ignore the fact that in time, some of its parts will get broken or corroded. Below are steps on how to maintain your fishing reel and do a fishing reel repair.

Fishing Reel

  1. First of all, clean and lubricate your fishing reel after every use. You can avoid problems when you do this. Be sure not to apply lubricant to the fishing line since it can get broken.
  2. When you use your fishing rod always, the fly reel gets broken in time. Always clean this part with alcohol or kerosene before storage. As for the other moving parts of the reel, and the spinning and bait casting reels, put lightweight oil as preventive maintenance.
  3. Rinse the fishing tackle with fresh water every time you fish in saltwater.
  4. Replace the damaged spool catch spring if the fly reel malfunctions. You can to this by removing the catch V-spring and the axle cover to put in the new V-spring. After which, you can put back the axle cover by securing it with the screws.
  5. Change the springs and drag washers if the bait-casting reel is not working properly. Steps are as follows: Remove the handle nut by detaching the screws. Do not lose the star drag or drag washer when doing this. Take off the plate screws, plate and spool. The plate consists of bridge screws. Remove this as well. After which, you can take off the bridge, main gear, spring, and ratchet. Clean and lubricate the drag washers and spring when removed. Change all damaged parts. Then of course, put back everything when done.
  6. Replace the bail or spring of an open-face spinning reel if it breaks or if it does not work properly. To install the bail or spring, you can do the following: Unfasten the nut that attaches the line spool to the reel. Secure the bail arm when you remove the bail and the locknut. Take off the bail spool. If the bail and roller are worn out, change immediately. Put in the new bail through the bail arm. By means of your pliers, remove the old spring. Check if the spring is damaged. Change it if needed, otherwise, put back the spring to where it is originally placed. Fasten back the roller to the bail and bail arm. Lastly, screw the bail locknut.
