How to Repair a Bumper

Bumper is the most common part of the car that is accidentally hit since it is the most exposed or protruded part of an automobile. 1. Prepare the needed materials such as car spray paint, clear coat, primer spray, wet-or-dry sandpaper, thick papers, and masking tape. Make sure you have everything you need before working since it is hard to rush to a store when you have already started.
2. In choosing the spray paint, make sure the color is exactly the same as your bumper. You can look at the owner’s manual to check where the color code of your bumper is imprinted. Or you can also visit your local dealer to ask for the code.
3. First wash and clean the damaged area thoroughly.
4. Next, sand the surface. This process may be a little tedious but you should never do this step hurriedly. You have to make sure that the surface is really smooth before doing the next procedure; otherwise your do-it-yourself project might be a disaster. The trick is to sand in different directions and not to rub on a single spot for a long time, or else the surface will be uneven.
5. Use your bare hands to check if the surface is already smooth. If it is, wash and clean the area again.
6. To ensure that the other parts of the car will not be painted, cover them using a thick paper and tape it surrounding the damaged area.
7. You can then spray the primer thinly. Let one coat dry first before applying another. Do not spray near the surface because this can cause drips or bubbles. Such imperfections happen and if it does, just sand that particular area and apply primer again.
8. When you have achieved the desired result, spray the final coat of primer then let it stay for 30 minutes or until it dries.
9. Similar to the application of the primer, you can then spray on the paint thinly. Take note that even if you have the exact color but your car’s paint is oxidized, the color will not match.
10. When the paint finally dries up, take off the masking tape. You will notice edges because of the tape. Just use rubbing compound to remove it. But if it does not work, use a very fine sandpaper to remove the edges then lightly spray the paint.
11. Lastly, apply on clear coat to closely match the color of the repaired area to the rest of the bumper.
