How to Grow Cherry Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are used in making relish trays, salads and as a snack. The cherry plant is very prolific if well taken care of and will be fruitful in warm weather as long as they receive regular maintenance. Some of the requirements to grow the cherry tomatoes include a large pot such as the self watering kind. The pot or containers selected should have holes at the bottom in order to allow excess water flow out.

The following steps should be followed when planting the tomatoes:

  • Buy the cherry tomato seedlings ready for transplanting after the first season has passed. Heirloom or pearl varieties are preferred. Two plants will be sufficient to produce many fruits.
  • Select the site where they will be planted. The site selected must receive full sunlight.
  • Add compost to the soil in which the tomatoes will be planted especially where the soil is clay or sandy.
  • Dig a hole that can fit the plant base.
  • Remove the tomato seedling from the container carefully. Using a garden trowel, dig at the base of the plant in order to break the soil which could have formed tight balls in order to free the roots. The roots of the plant are left hanging down ready for planting.
  • Place the seedling in the hole with the roots touching the ground level.
  • Cover the plant with soil and firm the soil around its base with the hands.
  • Affix a stake at the bottom of the plant of about 4 feet for support as the plant grows. Tie the seedling loosely to the stake.
  • Water the plant with generous amounts of water. Water the seedling at least every two days and fertilize the plant in order to enrich the soil content. The fertilizers used should not contain high nitrogen content since it can weaken the stem of the seedling. In addition, the fertilizers used should be soluble in water.
  • Mulch the plant in order to retain the moisture in the soil and discourage weeds from growing. Such things as grass clippings and chopped leaves make for good mulch.
  • Prune the plant for suckers and carry out pest control. Some of the limbs of the tomato may be clipped if the plant grows too large.
After a while, the tomato fruits will become glossy and even colored. They are now ready for harvesting.

Cherry tomatoes are among the simplest plants to cultivate. They ripen well to the vine translating into very juicy gems. The same principles put in place when growing tomatoes also apply for cherry tomatoes. Water the tomatoes often for juicy fruit and let them receive adequate sun.
