How to Cook Chickpeas

Chickpeas are one of the legumes used for a variety of dishes. Some use it for salads while others use it for deserts. Some use chickpeas for their stews while some mash them into balls to make the falafel dish. You can also make it into hummus by just cooking and grinding it into a paste. Others use it for soups and many other delicious dishes out there. There are really so many ways to cook chickpeas. It is rich in protein. Thus it’s a great ingredient to feed to your kids. Chickpeas also go by the name garbanzo beans or garbanzos. Others spell it as chick peas too. Let’s take a look at how to cook chickpeas in a couple of ways.

Chickpeas

Before we start learning how to cook chickpeas, you should remember that before cooking, it must be soaked in water overnight. If you want to avoid having to do this each and every time you cook chickpeas, you can simply buy the chickpeas in cans that can be found in most supermarkets or groceries. However, you might miss up on the full flavor of this tasty ingredient. So now that you know about that, let’s try cooking chickpeas with this flavorful dish.

You will need the following ingredients:

  1. 1 can of chickpeas, 15 oz.
  2. 4 c of water
  3. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  4. 1 chopped onion
  5. 1 tsp salt
  6. 2 cloves minced garlic
  7. 2 tsp coriander, ground
  8. 1 large chopped green chili pepper
  9. 1 diced tomato

Now let’s begin cooking.

  1. First thing to do is to combine the chickpeas and three cups of water in a sauce pan. Simmer.
  2. Add salt for seasoning and continue simmering until the chickpeas become tender.
  3. Once done, remove the chickpeas from the pan and drain.
  4. On a separate pan, heat the oil and add the onions. Fry until it becomes golden brown.
  5. Now add the garlic, chili pepper, as well as the coriander to the onions in the pan.
  6. Fry for a couple of minutes more until the garlic is cooked well.
  7. Now, it’s time to add the tomato.
  8. Continue cooking and let the liquid reduce until it is completely gone.
  9. Now, add in the drained chickpeas.
  10. Put the heat in low setting and let cook for another five minutes.
  11. Next, add a cup of water and cover.
  12. Simmer for about 30 minutes.
  13. Now, turn of the heat and serve!
