How to build a Go Kart

Building a Go Kart is basically the same as a real car. It has an engine, wheels, seats, steering wheel, accelerator pedal, brake pedal, etc. The good news is you can get these parts in a junk yard or a lawnmower. Usually, the front part consists of 2 wheels, steering wheel, accelerator pedal and brake pedal. The middle part would be the driver’s seat. The rear part has the 2 wheels rear axles, drive shaft, drive pulley, drive belt and the engine, which is placed at the back of the seat. The steps on how to build a go kart below only serve as a guide for building a one. Other details may have been missed out in this guide and therefore should seek advice from a professional mechanic. And remember always wear protective gears when driving a Go Kart!

  1. Initially, you have to draw a sketch of your Go Kart to serve as your guide through out your project.
  2. Buy 1 inch round or square tubing of at least 40 feet. You will need a welder for this. If you do not know how to weld you can hire a professional welder.
  3. Get all the parts needed: engine, pedals, set of wheels, seat, steering wheel, steering linkage, front axle swivels, tie rod, brake assembly, rear axles, drive shaft, drive pulley and belt.
  4. Plan the frame in such a way that you have to consider how well it will fit you.
  5. Weld the frame together. Take note that the welds should be of good quality for your safety.
  6. Make a floor board out of wood or metal sheets then attach it to the frame.
  7. Next, weld the steering wheel to the frame.
  8. Attach the two front tires with the corresponding set-up of front axle swivels and tie rod, and then weld it to the steering linkage.
  9. You can now attach the accelerator and brake pedals to the frame.
  10. And then, weld the seats to the frame. Remember that seats can just be found in a junk yard or you can also have custom made seats.
  11. Put the engine at the back of the seat and weld it to the frame.
  12. Attach the 2 rear wheels with the corresponding rear axles, drive shaft and drive pulley.
  13. Connect the drive belt from the engine to the drive shaft.
  14. Then, connect the accelerator pedal to the engine throttle using a throttle cable.
  15. Lastly, connect the brake pedal to the brake assembly. Again, this can be taken from a junk yard or from an old Go Kart.
