How to Build a Deck Bench

A deck bench is a long seat that acts as an accessory for a deck and can be made to seat 2 or more people. It can be used to entertain guests or simply for relaxing outdoors. In addition, the bench is a great ornamental feature.

Deck Bench

  • The required materials are: cedar wood, 3 inch deck screws, half inch desk screws
  • Tools: circular saw, drill

The following are the dimensions of the wood for the frame and seat:

  • 2 portions of 1” x 3”x 42” which will be used for the sides
  • 2 portions of 1” x 3” x 45” used for the ends
  • One 1” x 1” x 45” slat
  • Four braces measuring 1” x 5” x 15” and legs measuring 3”x 3”x 13”

The guidelines for constructions are as follows:

  • The end pieces are fastened to the side portions by drilling the three inch deck screws on the side plane.
  • The slat is attached to the frame on both ends with three inch deck screws.
  • To make the pedestal, the slat is faced upside down and the stretcher outlines are marked by measuring five inches and three inches from the inner part of the end pieces.
  • Stretchers are drilled into the slat with the use of half inch deck screws. The legs will be held in position with the help of the braces.
  • To shape the braces, draw a one and a half inch line on the corner of it top and a similar line on the corner of the bottom side. The same procedure is done for all the other braces to shape their ends.
  • To assemble the bench, braces are attached to the stretcher sides using three inch screws then attach the braces to each leg on the planes that touch the bench. Three inch screws are used to do this.
  • To give the deck bench a good finish, it should be sandpapered and a coat of desired paint gives it a good look.

During the whole construction there are various points that one should consider when making a deck bench. The surface should be made as smooth as possible to ensure no injuries to those sitting on the bench. The screw holes need to be filled with wood putty and painted over to give a smoothed over look. Low decks require low deck benches and if the deck is high it should have railings.
