How to Build a Boat Dock

A boat dock is popular for many reasons the main one being the fact that it is a parking space for boats. It is also used by boats as leverage as well as holding parties and other social gatherings, lazing about and also fishing. People who own boats and live at the beach or close to an ocean, a river or a lake can make their own docks where they may tie up their boats. There are certain materials that may be used such as wood, which is most common. Other docks are made of more permanent materials such as metal or concrete. Since wood is the most appropriate because it is easy to make, people with excellent carpentry skills can find it fairly easy to make the dock.

Boat Dock

The first step is to decide whether the dock should be free-standing or floating. The size of the dock is also determined at this point.
The docking area will depend on how deep the water is. A shallow area will need an extended dock to safely harbor the boat.

The lounging area is then figured out as well as the area for boarding. The information that has been gathered should be used to plan the boat dock and this plan should be drawn to the specifications one needs or look at other places like the Internet for a dock plan.

The next step is to head for the hardware store with the plan to get all needed materials. Material specifications will be different from one dock to another. In order to have the most excellent boat docks, the builder needs 2” x 6” and 4” x 4” boards.

The next step calls for making the lounge area first. This is done by laying out the supports and then screwing the boards all along these supports. This process should be repeated when constructing the boarding part.

Then bumpers are attached at the boarding part’s edges. The huge pieces of wood are positioned in the water as per the specifications that are outlined in the plan. This process is known as driving the posts. It prevents dock movement.

The boarding part and lounging area are placed in the water and attached to the posts that are placed in the water. If the plan has a railing, build it and secure it well.

All this can be achieved by anybody but if there is a problem faced when building the dock, it is wise to seek for help from a professional. However, this step by step guide will come in handy when building a dock.
