Country Home Decor

Designing your home to look like a country themed American home is no easy task. While it may look cozy and easy to digest on the outside, finding the right nick nacks and trends to add to each room of your house can prove difficult. If you have the time and money, there’s no reason why you can’t redesign your entire home into something that everyone will awe at without thinking it looks tacky. Instead of just throwing in some accessories here and there, do the project right and design every room of your house to be as proper and as country as possible. Below you’ll find tips and tricks we’ve collected that will help you get your country home décor together and as spot on and authentic as you can make it.

The Kitchen

The kitchen may be the most important room in the house when it comes to designing a country home. The kitchen is usually the area that everyone congregates, so having a well-designed kitchen that not only has everything you need but also has a cozy feeling is a must. And because many kitchens usually have tile floors, adding warmth to a kitchen is more difficult than other rooms in the house. So, how do you achieve the perfect balance of aesthetics and functionality?

  • Paint: The wall color is the first thing anyone notices when they walk into a room. Painting your kitchen a soft color will give it a real country feel. Consider something like a pastel blue or peach and maybe paint opposite walls different colors. Adding color adds warmth and if you pick colors that are really bright and loud, you won’t have an inviting atmosphere.
  • Cabinets: The cabinets in a country kitchen should definitely be made of wood. Wooden cabinets, especially ones that are made to look dated, are a staple in the kitchen and will give your kitchen an old timey feel.
  • Lighting: In addition to old timey feeling cabinets, getting lighting fixtures made of something like wrought iron or rusted metal will also bring a little warmth to the room.
  • Accents: Somewhere around the countertops and the walls, usually in the area that is just below the cabinets, consider adding some type of tile or brick accents. Brick or colored tile will add a little bit of texture to the room so that the walls aren’t too intimidating. Try and match the tiles with the cabinet color.
  • Furniture: If you stumble across some old furniture at a garage sale that’s pretty beaten up, try adding some paint. Painting old furniture is a great way to make it seem even older and more rustic. It’s good to have a few pieces of furniture that no one can use in the kitchen to not only fill the room, but to give character to the setting you’re trying to convey.

Accessories to Consider

  1. Kettles
  2. Straw hats
  3. Vases
  4. “Welcome Home” style plaques
  5. Key ring for the entryway

Dining Room

Obviously after the kitchen you’re going to want to redecorate your dining room. The dining room is where everyone will congregate for their meals, so having a dining room to complement the kitchen will help make your home pop. It’s probably a good idea to carry the colors you have in the kitchen over into the dining room. But instead of doing a carbon copy, consider adding other complimentary colors to the mix to make everything stand out.

  • Table: The dining room table should be long and rectangular. If possible, try and find an older table that has a few knicks and scratches on it. And on top of all of that, country dining room tables are typically made of wood, meaning that you should try and find some aged wood that isn’t off the factory floor.
  • Dresser: Next to the table, preferably against the wall, try finding a matching cabinet or dresser that will go with the kitchen table. The dresser will house all your plates and fancy dishes, so make sure you find something that looks nice. The dresser shouldn’t be too large or have too many corners. Obviously, things like rounded or square edges is a personal preference, but squared off edges are popular in country home décor as they imply simplicity and regularity to things.
  • TableCloth: Try and find a tablecloth the same color as the walls. If you can’t find a tablecloth, consider a table runner instead. Table runners are, in my opinion, better suited for long tables than a full tablecloth. Then, in the center of the table, fresh flowers are always a nice touch. Plus, the colors and greenery on the flowers will help breathe life into an otherwise boring room.

Accessories to Consider

  1. Plates to match the walls
  2. Fancy set of coffee mugs
  3. Coffee mug rack to go alongside the dresser
  4. Small wine bottle rack
  5. Rug for under the table with a checkerboard pattern

Bathroom

Next to the kitchen, the bathroom may be the second most used room in the entire house. It’s used b y everyone for a multitude of things and if you’re going to have guests over, they’re more than likely going to judge your bathroom decorations. Let’s dive into how you can keep the bathroom simple and tidy with a country flair thrown in.

  • Towels: Country bathroom towels are typically nonintrusive. Try and get neutral-colored towels like white if possible as they match with anything and you don’t have to adhere to a particular theme by going neutral.
  • Paint: If possible in the bathroom, try and add a different color. Add a color that drastically clashes with the kitchen and dining room colors and make sure that it isn’t too bright. Remember, pastel and easy colors are the best way to go.
  • Floors: Bathroom floors are best left as either tile or wood. Wood floors are preferred as they have a more rustic feel and can complement the wood in your kitchen furniture. Also, wood has a much warmer and homely feel than tile, which is often considered sterile. But if you must choose tile, try and go with a tile color that isn’t white. Going with an off-white or tanish color will help give the room a little “wooden color.”
  • Wicker: Wicker is loved in country décor. Wicker baskets can be used to hold your soap and hand towels next to the sink and are usually cheap in furniture stores. Don’t go overboard with wicker as too much can be seen as tacky, but a small basket for the towels and maybe a wicker trash bin will go a long way.

Living Room

The living room is going to take on a much different feel than the rest of the house. Whereas the kitchen and dining room are the center of activity, the living room is a place to relax and unwind from a hard day’s work.

  • Flooring: Wooden floors are preferable in the living room, but if you don’t have the money to spend on wooden floors, a rug is a great alternative. Country homes are all about push and pull, so a rug for your living room should be livelier than your walls. If you can find a checkerboard patterned rug, maybe with some greens, yellows, and red, you’re on the right track. Drape that down over your carpet to not only protect it, but to hide its simplicity.
  • TV Cabinet: Your TV cabinet should follow suit with your dining room table. If you can find a wooden TV cabinet that not only looks rustic but also has a unique appeal about it, you’re in business. Try and not find something that’s going to hide the TV. Cabinets and closed doors are very uninviting, so if you can find a flat top TV cabinet to rest your TV on, that’s the better choice.
  • Couch: Ah the couch, the focal point of any living room. Country couches are usually covered in some type of floral print. As with the rug, try and find something that captures the colors of the outdoors. That means greens, reds, and yellows to pull everything together. Also on your couch, cushions are a very inviting extra piece. Don’t go overboard, but some nice cushions can go a long way.

Accessories to Consider

  1. Floral cushions
  2. Rocking chair
  3. Wooden chest
  4. Small plant pots
  5. Desk or bureau to work

Bedrooms

Finally, we make it to the bedroom. As some say, it’s where the magic happens. In a country home, the bedroom should seem almost larger than life. Not in the sense that you want to bedazzle guests with strobe lights and lasers flashing left and right, but in the sense that things should be bigger in the bedroom. This means a bigger bed and bigger cabinets. This is your comfort space and where you spend 1/3 of your life sleeping. Make it comfortable.

  • Bed: Just like any other type of master bedroom, you want to get a bed that makes an impression. Getting a queen or king size bed is a must. Also, when bed shopping, try and find beds that are higher off the ground than traditional beds. Having to step up to your bed shows signs of power and wealth. Try and find a wooden bed if possible. The bed posts should be big as well, as they too will give the illusion of a bigger room and bigger bed.
  • Covers: The bed covers are also a big decision in the country bedroom. Bed covers should be thick and comfortable. Stuffed duvets or something similar is a god route to take as you’re guaranteed both comfort and quality. When picking a color for your room, try doing a mixture of the other room colors plus some brightness. Add one unique color to your bedroom to keep yourself interested after leaving the kitchen or living room.
  • Furniture: Try and keep your bedroom sparse. Having too many things hanging here and there is distracting and can make your bedroom seem cluttered. And although country décor is often associated with redneck décor, try your hardest to keep the exercise machine out of the bedroom. Maybe get a chest of drawers or a small footlocker for the end of the bed to pull the room together. Also, paintings don’t hurt. Calm scenes of nature or animals are a good place to start.

Accessories to Consider

  1. Wicker baskets
  2. Wooden foot lockers
  3. Shoe rack
  4. Chest of drawers for clothes
  5. Bed side cabinets made of old timey wood
  6. Lamps with plain colored lamp shades and tassels
  7. Paintings of nature and outside
